Auckland Women’s Centre has been running self-defence classes for over 20 years.

We are incredibly proud that these classes have been free and accessible to our community for so long — and we want to keep them that way. Since these classes are so much more than learning physical tools to defend ourselves. These classes are about confidence, consent, autonomy, and the right to take up space.

This is our resistance in a world that is not built for us. This is one way for us to reclaim our power back and empowering our girls to do the same as they navigate a world that is not always safe.

Not because it is our responsibility to prevent violence — but because women and our gender diverse friends deserve to feel strong, informed, and supported in their bodies and their lives.

Why we need your support now

Right now, this programme is at risk due to funding cuts to women’s self-defence services. At the same time, RSE education in schools — including consent, identity, and healthy relationships — has been cut. That means fewer early interventions, and more pressure on community services like ours to step in. At Auckland Women’s Centre, these classes are non-negotiable. They are too important to lose, and we are committed to keeping them running. But we can’t do this alone.
