Meet our new Women’s Support Coordinator Sofia Davis
Sofia Davis (she/her) now looks after Women’s Support (free advice, referral and information), and coordinates our community education programme.
“Feminism has been a passion of mine since I discovered it existed!” says Sofia, smiling. When she was 12 years old, her social studies class was asked to choose their own research topics – and Sofia chose feminism. “I had read about slut shaming in a newspaper and I thought: ‘Oh yeah, something’s really not right about that!’ – about the different expectations of women and men. It got me thinking about other types of sexism – including from my male friends at the time – their upbringing was so different from mine.”
Her perception of different experiences lead her to intersectional feminism which acknowledges that different burdens of oppression can intersect (such as misogyny, racism, colonisation and transphobia) and be imposed on different groups of women
“I became the outspoken one at the dinner table and with my friends – speaking out about homophobia and other injustices in our society.”
Sofia identifies as queer and neurodivergent, and she moved to Aotearoa when she was four, after being born in Argentina, so she is experienced in shifting between different cultures. She also has a passion for animals, and has previously worked in animal care (as well as logistics and sales), and volunteered for animal shelters. Her own wee re-homed dog is called Hughie.
Warm, compassionate and non-judgemental, Sofia is finding it very fulfilling to assist women with whatever they’re facing – and also to facilitate women’s creativity in the community education programme. She’s always picking up new arts & crafts hobbies herself: “even if I’m not the best at it, having a creative outlet is v important to me!”
Come and say kia ora to Sofia if you’re near the centre – look out for the bright-green crop top she knitted for herself!
