TASKS AND OBJECTIVES OF ROLE
Actively work towards the fulfilment of the role’s purpose as stated above, specifically by:
- Increasing AVA (Anti-Violence Action) grassroots advocacy group membership, and attraction to women of diverse backgrounds
- Increasing AVA members’ enjoyment of activism, and confidence to take collective action
- Increasing AVA members’ knowledge of intersectional feminism
- Developing opportunities (with other team members) for AVA and also for women around the country to be included in the AWC campaign to reset social norms around stalking and relationships, and (if appropriate) the campaign to ensure anti-stalking legislation is fit for purpose.
- Assisting in the development and implementation of the Anti-Stalking Campaign Strategic plan and the Community Outreach Plan, with access to koha as appropriate
- Attending Anti-Violence Action (AVA) meetings (currently held every three weeks, evenings).
- Supporting project team members with other project tasks, as and when necessary, such as communications.
In these activities, the CO – with the support of other team members, particularly Māori Liaison – will ensure all work reflects Māori concerns and supports Māori aspirations.
GENERAL STAFF RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
The Community Organiser will:
- Behave in an honest and transparent manner.
- Where practical, participate in AWC team-building events and special AWC activities, such as the AGM.
- Keep all financial source documents up-to-date including time sheets and mileage claim forms, and provide GST receipts for any expenditure.
- Take good care of all equipment and resources and report any damage or loss to the Manager.
- ensure that all aspects of her mahi are consistent with AWC’s mission statement, philosophy, constitutional objectives, strategic plan, protocols and policies.
- Assist the Funding Coordinator by providing information she needs for funding applications, e.g. reports and photos of activities.
PERSON SPECIFICATION:
We envisage that an appropriate appointee will have the following attributes:
- An understanding of, and commitment to, the philosophy and mahi of the Centre.
- An awareness of intersectional feminism and the community sector.
- An awareness of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its implications for community groups, and a commitment to honouring this.
- An understanding that trans women are women.
- Honesty and transparency
- a passion for motivating, supporting and developing volunteers
- helpful but not necessary: some experience of collective advocacy or campaigning, whether local or national
- community networks
- An intersectional feminist and/or mana wahine understanding, including of family violence and sexual violence.
- An understanding of cross-cultural liaison and its challenges
- Demonstrated leadership and communication skills.
- Ability to think strategically (experience in campaign strategy not necessary, but would be helpful)
- Self-motivated, versatile, problem solving
- Proven financial, keyboard, computer and organisational skills.
- Ability to work with a small group of women in a community-based agency in a non-hierarchical way.
- Good community development skills, including relationship-building, a non-judgmental and positive attitude, communication skills, conflict resolution and self-agency.
