Tinā – Movie Fundraiser
“Miki Magasiva's haunting and heart-warming debut feature is a simply stunning, crowd-pleasing delight.” – The Post
“Tinā” is a Samoan term of respect for a female elder, and Anapela Polataivao compels respect for her remarkable turn as Mareta, a dryly witty but grieving teacher, whose daughter died in the Christchurch quakes.
If you enjoy an emotional release – both tears and laughter, expertly combined – plus the joy and validation of seeing a movie which centres a mature woman of colour – come and see Tinā with us! This New Zealand-Samoan film follows impressive, compelling Anapela Polataivao as Mareta, grieving her daughter’s death in the Christchurch quakes. Mareta becomes a substitute teacher at an “elite” school and starts a choir against resistance from the school’s conservative Pākehā leaders – cue amazing choral music thanks to choirmaster/arranger Tuilagi Dr. Igelese Ete (Lord of the Rings and Moana).
A triumph at the Hawai’i International Film Festival, Tinā is a labour of love from Miki Magasiva, who directed and produced the film and also co-wrote it with Mario Gaoa. The film also features audience faves Beulah Koale and Nicole Whippy. We’re really looking forward to this one!
