Lee Movie Night
'Lee' Movie Fundraiser
Described by The Guardian as “undeniably impactful” thanks to its striking visuals and Kate Winslet’s “remarkable” performance, Lee tells the WWII story of the incredible Lee Miller, a model and muse of surrealist Man Ray who became war photographer for Vogue.
Lee is a great role model because she wasn’t given the opportunity to become a war correspondent. She went out and found it. – Lee Director Ellen Kuras
Winslet captures the spirit of the character: the brawling, confrontational tough-broad aspects of Miller’s personality, as well as her considerable magnetism. – The Guardian
In a lifetime of well-chosen roles, this may be [Winslet’s] richest. – BBC
It makes sense, then, that Lee is a passion project for Winslet, who also produced the film, and ensured another woman directed it.
[Lee is] a woman’s-eye view of a photographer who cast a woman’s eye over the war and its aftermath. … She saw the micro-details of combat in a way that her male counterparts frequently overlooked. – The Guardian
[Director Ellen Kuras] shapes the film with supreme authority and intelligent choices at every turn. – BBC
Packed full of A-list actors (Marion Cotillard, Alexander Skarsgård, Andrea Riseborough, Andy Samberg, Josh O’Connor), Lee examines the psychological toll of war while also portraying a complex woman who was both vulnerable and an all-round badass. A fantastic women-led film to watch surrounded by women at the Auckland Women’s Centre fundraiser!
